About Cathy Block…

As a music educator, Cathy is the music department head at Solebury School, and is the director of the jazz ensemble, Rock ensemble, and teaches several music electives. She has developed the introductory music program for young children called Music is Wonderful! This program is currently implemented in several schools. Cathy also gives private flute, guitar, ukulele, banjo, piano and composition lessons. She does concerts and assemblies regularly at schools and libraries, including workshops on song writing, and flute master classes.

Cathy is also the founder and musical director of The Living Green Children’s Chorus which has raised thousands of dollars for local land preservation.

She is an accomplished flutist, in both classical and jazz, and has performed on many recordings. Cathy currently plays regularly with several ensembles in the Philadelphia area.

As a composer/songwriter, Cathy has written songs recorded by Diana Ross, Kool & The Gang, Al Jarreau, Mindless Behavior, New Edition, The Manhattans, MylekaTisha Campbell , and many others.

Her song, Never Explain Love, was featured as the closing credit song in the Spike Lee motion picture Do The Right Thing.

Cathy’s music has also been featured on prime time television series.

Cathy’s album of original music for children, Timeless, was given the prestigious Editor’s Choice Award for children’s best audio by The American Library Association’s Book List. Timeless also garnered The Toy Portfolio Platinum Award for Best Audio.

Her musical, That’s What Kids Do! – a show about kids that stars kids – has received rave reviews: School Library Journal calls the original studio cast recording “upbeat, empowering, and fun.” Book List said That’s What Kids Do! is “…a listening pleasure.” This show has been licensed for productions from diverse places including: Ohio, Toronto, and South Africa. That’s What Kids Do! is the first part of a musical trilogy, by Cathy.

Cathy Block holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Jazz Composition and Arranging from Berklee College of Music, where she graduated magna cum laude. She also has studied at The Boston Conservatory Of Music. Cathy has orchestrated for symphonic orchestra, big band, and small combos.
